International Day of Human Space Flight, 12 April
In 2011, the General Assembly, recognising the 50th anniversary of the first ever human spaceflight, declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight. The resolution, A/RES/65/271 of 7 April 2011, called it a day "to celebrate each year at the international level the beginning of the space era for mankind, reaffirming the important contribution of space science and technology in achieving sustainable development goals and increasing the well-being of States and peoples, as well as ensuring the realization of their aspiration to maintain outer space for peaceful purposes."
It was on 12 April 1961 that Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet citizen, carried out the first human space flight, an historic event paving the way for space exploration for the benefit of all humanity
Every year on April 15th, people around the globe celebrate World Art Day, a tribute to the enduring impact of art across various cultures and societies. This date was specifically chosen to honor the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, who is emblematic of artistic freedom and peace. World Art Day not only celebrates the remarkable contributions of artists but also emphasizes the vital role of art in human communication, cultural identity, and personal freedom.
- Purpose: To raise awareness about pollution, climate change, and the urgent need for environmental conservation.
- Origin: The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, in the United States, initiated by Senator Gaylord Nelson after a major 1969 oil spill.
- Global Recognition: In 2009, the United Nations officially designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day.
English Language Day at the United Nations is celebrated on the 23rd of April — the date traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare. As well as being the English language's most famous playwright, Shakespeare had a significant impact on modern-day English. Shakespeare's creativity with language meant he contributed hundreds of new words and phrases: 'gossip'; 'fashionable' and 'lonely' were all first used by Shakespeare. He also invented phrases like 'break the ice', 'faint-hearted' and 'love is blind'.
English is one of the languages of international communication. People from different countries and cultures are increasingly able to communicate with each other in English, even if it is not their first language. This makes it an essential tool for global cooperation and diplomacy.
At the United Nations, English is one of the two working languages, along with French.
